A wonderful complex secret recipe of the finest Virginias, choice Turkish and Orientals and Cyprian Latakia, all hand blended together, hard pressed and broad cut into thick flakes. Smallish tin fits in pocket or carrying case well. An elegant flake presentation. It makes me hungry. I'm buying multiple tins of this stuff. Pack it loosely and don't tamp it down much at all. Highly recommended if you can get your hands on it. The first time I smoked this it was remarkable. I have smoked from both older and newer production and in my experience they are fairly consistent and equally excellent. To my way of thinking, it's like drinking decaffeinated coffee. Esoterica Tinned Pipe Tobaccos The smoking experience is as smooth as buttered velvet. I do recommend you to try, because I am in the minority, but in a word- bitter. The smokey latakia is perfectly balanced by the orientals that are savory and incense like, both supported by a dark mellow sweetness. The latakia seems in just about the correct proportion to not overpower the Orientals which dominate the flavor. Full of character and smokey latakia. I remember! I think that when you leave it half open on the ground it would make a fine ant-exterminator. Holy is a perfect intensifier for my description of this offering: holy mole, holy cow, and holy mackerel are just a few. Latakia is the main ingredient in this and it has faded a lot over time. Mild Latakia flavor with bakers chocolate undertone. The second was Frog Morton. I tried Penzance on a recommendation looking for a fuller English than what I usually smoke. I KNOW that I'll go out tomorrow and buy a bagfull!!!! The flake crumbles marvellously and, in raw form, I am rather charmed by this offering. The aftertaste is stronger too, but if you like English tobaccos you wouldn't complain. The second half of the bowl is where this tobacco comes into its own with a very nice woody, toasty flavor. Esoterica's Cardiff is an outstanding, well-balanced mixture of four Virginias, pressed until reddish-brown and then fully rubbed up. I can understand how someone can say that the latakia used here is quite strong and complex, but I certainly wouldn't classify the aroma on the periodic table. I doubt it as Ive found some readily available blends that I enjoy equally as much. Price? Lo-and-behold, there was an 8-oz. Works well in any size briar or meerschaum. I was pleasantly surprised when I happened upon this blend at a tobacconist, since a tin of Penzance is about as common as a solar eclipse these days due to huge demand, astronomical hype and hoarding. I have vastly enriched my smoking pleasure from the reviews I've read here. You may appreciate that if you are a gardener, it is like the smell of fresh loamy garden soil, perhaps with a bit of mulch. Incredibly smooth and flavorful from start to finish. It's a remarkable blend, but surely not as venerable as the nu-tweedsters might have us believe. I can`t put my finger on what makes it so tasty, but this blend is worth a try. The smoke was extremely woodsy from what must be a higher grade Latakia used back then. I love many of the GLP and C&D blends, and still have yet to try some of them, but this is the tobacco that won me over to smoking latakia blends in the first place, and sent me in search of rich oriental blends. No doubt you can taste the Latakia & Orientals. Relights occur sometimes but are not a nuisance because they are not harsh. The less available this becomes, the more people are going to seek it. The only thing that helped fight that horrible taste was a nice bowl of Mac Baren Mixture! Definitely purchase some if you can find it. I've been avoiding adding many more words to the reviews. I am in the camp that Esoterica has a special and proprietary topping. Nice rectangular golden tin with a label that looks like it was printed at home. I did look for mold with a magnifying glass and couldn't see anything obvious but there were a few suspicious flakes. Several other Esoterica blends have that same iodine scent as a noticeable component of the tin bouquet. I smoked aromatics when I began pipe smoking a year ago, but this is what I smoke. I believe that Penzance will one day be for me as it is with many of the conniseurs of the pipe. While I find it a delicious and refined blend, it is not worth the insane hype that surrounds it. Returns. This happened once when I had to fight to get it lit, and tended this way toward a couple of late bowls. Even so, when I opened the cardboard, I could smell the latakia with the tin sealed and wrapped in plastic wrap. When others share your passions it doubles your pleasure. Recommend to all English blend enthusiasts, and the Va/Per smokers who like to kick it up a notch, on occasion. When something is built up to be this great you can only be let down. This is not a complex blend and changes very little from beginning to end.
